Prepare Yourself for a Burst of Flavor with This Slow-Cooked Amish-Style Pot Roast
Nothing compares to the comforting aroma of a slow-cooked pot roast filling your home after hours of gentle cooking. This Amish-Style Pot Roast is a timeless comfort food made with tender beef, hearty vegetables, and a rich, savory broth that develops incredible flavor as it slowly simmers throughout the day. Every bite is melt-in-your-mouth tender, while the carrots and potatoes absorb the delicious juices, making this a complete meal that’s both satisfying and nourishing.
Inspired by traditional Amish home cooking, this recipe focuses on simple, wholesome ingredients prepared with patience rather than complicated techniques. The beef is first seared to develop a rich, caramelized crust before slowly cooking with onions, garlic, herbs, and broth until it becomes fork-tender. As the hours pass, the vegetables soften beautifully and the broth transforms into a flavorful gravy-like sauce that ties every ingredient together. The result is a hearty homemade dinner that’s perfect for family gatherings, Sunday meals, or cozy evenings at home.
One of the greatest things about this recipe is how effortless it becomes once everything is in the slow cooker. After just a few minutes of preparation, the slow cooker takes care of the rest, leaving you free to enjoy your day while dinner cooks itself. Whether served with crusty bread, creamy mashed potatoes, or simply enjoyed on its own, this Amish-Style Pot Roast is a comforting classic you’ll find yourself making again and again.
Ingredients:
3 to 4 pounds beef chuck roast.
2 tablespoons vegetable oil.
Salt, to taste.
Black pepper, to taste.
1 onion, chopped.
3 to 4 cloves garlic, minced.
4 cups beef broth.
2 cups carrots, chopped.
2 cups Yukon Gold or red potatoes, cubed.
2 to 3 sprigs fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme.
1 to 2 bay leaves.
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce.
Instructions:
Step 1
Season the beef chuck roast generously with salt and black pepper on all sides. Allow it to sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes while preparing the other ingredients.
Step 2
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully place the roast into the skillet.
Step 3
Sear the roast for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side until a deep golden-brown crust forms. This step adds rich flavor to the finished pot roast.
Step 4
Place the chopped onion and minced garlic into the bottom of the slow cooker. Spread them into an even layer to create a flavorful base.
Step 5
Transfer the seared roast onto the onions and garlic. Position it in the center of the slow cooker.
Step 6
Arrange the chopped carrots and cubed potatoes around the roast. Spread them evenly so they cook at the same rate.
Step 7
Pour the beef broth into the slow cooker without washing away the seasoning on top of the roast. Add the Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and bay leaves.
